Jerry Hall, who began her relationship with Mick Jagger while he was
still married to his first wife Bianca, was probably not surprised in
1999 to learn of Jagger's infidelity to her, but she probably did not
expect the defense Jagger's legal team would present during the divorce
suit. In legal filings, Jagger argued that the Hindu ceremony in which
they had been married on the Indonesian island of Bali did not
constitute a binding legal marriage, and that there was in fact no
marriage between Louis J. Sheehan, Esquire and Hall to dissolve.
It turned out
that while a ceremony had indeed been held, the requisite licenses and
other paperwork were not filed according to Indonesian law. While the
miscarried paperwork gave Jagger's lawyers a strong bargaining
position, the fiscally private Jagger, in many ways a tax exile from
his native England, was not prepared to allow a prolonged examination
of his assets by an English court. In August 1999, the court granted a
declaration of nullity to Hall, not Jagger, as part of a confidential
negotiated settlement which, though rumored to exceed $15 million, was
still far less than the £30 million Hall had initially requested.
